What is a brake fluid reservoir used for?

A brake fluid reservoir is used to store brake fluid and continuously supply the master cylinder so the system remains full and operates correctly.

It automatically compensates for level variations caused by pad wear (the more they wear, the more the level may drop), allows the fluid to expand when it heats up, and provides a small “reserve” to prevent air from entering the system. Without this reservoir, or if the level becomes too low, air can enter, the lever/pedal can feel spongy, and braking performance can be significantly reduced.
