What is a brake fluid reservoir used for?

A brake fluid reservoir is used to store brake fluid and continuously supply the master cylinder, so the system remains full and operates properly.

It automatically compensates for level variations due to pad wear (the more they wear, the more the level can drop), allows the fluid to expand when it heats up, and provides a small “reserve” to prevent air from entering the system. Without this reservoir, or if the level becomes too low, air can enter, the lever/pedal can feel spongy, and braking performance can be significantly reduced.
