Why use an oversized Jetprime airbox?

On the stock Yamaha T-MAX, the intake system is deliberately highly restrictive to meet homologation requirements, especially noise regulations. To reduce intake noise, Yamaha uses internal baffles, reduced cross-sections, and complex air paths. The result is quieter airflow, but also slower, less direct, and lower in volume.

However, an engine needs a sufficient amount of air to run efficiently. More specifically, it needs a stable volume of air that is immediately available as engine speed increases. On a strictly stock T-MAX, these limitations remain acceptable.

On the other hand, as soon as the engine is “modified” — for example with a freer-flowing exhaust, an ECU remap, a modified variator, or engine tuning — air demand increases significantly. At that point, the stock airbox becomes a real bottleneck. The oversized Jetprime airbox addresses this problem precisely.

How the oversized Jetprime airbox works

The oversized Jetprime airbox was developed to address this issue precisely. Its principle is based on increasing the volume of air available upstream of the intake. A larger volume acts like an air reservoir, capable of feeding the engine without a pressure drop during hard acceleration or at high rpm.

Air also flows more directly, with fewer internal disturbances, which improves flow speed and consistency. In practical terms, this allows the engine to “breathe” better. When opening the throttle, air arrives faster and in greater quantity, improving cylinder filling. The engine becomes more responsive, stronger through the mid-range, and more consistent at high rpm. On a tuned T-MAX, this improvement is essential to truly take advantage of the gains brought by other modifications.

It is also important to understand that this airbox is not only about gaining peak power. It improves the engine’s overall balance. Operation becomes smoother, rev increases are cleaner, and throttle response is more precise. Without this additional air supply, a tuned engine may feel like it is “choking” or hitting a ceiling despite performance parts.
