What is a PAIR system on a motorcycle?

The PAIR system on a motorcycle is an anti-pollution device. PAIR stands for Pulsed Secondary Air Injection. In practical terms, it injects fresh air into the exhaust, right after the engine outlet. This additional air helps burn unburnt gases coming from the engine, in order to reduce pollutant emissions and meet environmental standards.

This system provides no performance gain. It is mainly there for compliance with regulations. However, it can cause certain side effects such as popping on deceleration, especially with a modified exhaust system, or slightly interfere with tuning on track-prepared motorcycles.

In short, the PAIR helps the motorcycle pollute less without increasing power, and its role is limited to the exhaust system.

Why remove a PAIR system on a track motorcycle?

On a track motorcycle, the PAIR system is often removed for very practical reasons, not to gain power. First, the PAIR alters exhaust behavior. By injecting fresh air into the burnt gases, it causes bangs on deceleration and can interfere with the lambda sensor reading. On a track motorcycle, where the engine mapping needs to be as accurate as possible, this is not desirable.

Then, when fitting a racing exhaust or modifying the intake, the PAIR becomes useless and sometimes troublesome. It can lead to backfires, less stable behavior on closed throttle, and make dyno tuning more complicated.

There is also a reliability and simplicity reason. On track, the goal is to remove anything that is not essential. Removing the PAIR reduces the number of hoses, valves and parts that could leak or fail.

Finally, since a track motorcycle does not run on public roads, complying with anti-pollution standards is no longer a constraint.
