What are the different types of motorcycle locks?
Each type of lock has its own features, advantages and disadvantages that are important to understand in order to make the right choice.
The U-lock is one of the most reliable and secure devices. It consists of a rigid shackle made of hardened steel, designed to resist sawing and bolt-cropping attempts. It allows you to attach the motorcycle to a fixed point, such as a post or rail, which makes it particularly effective against lifting theft. Its main drawback is its bulk, which can make it difficult to transport if the bike does not have enough storage space.
The chain lock offers greater flexibility. Made up of a reinforced steel chain and a robust padlock, it allows the motorcycle to be secured to different types of anchor points, even in places that are less suitable for a U-lock. However, its level of security largely depends on the thickness and quality of the chain and the padlock used. In addition, it is often heavier than a U-lock, which can be a disadvantage for those who want an easy-to-carry device.
The disc lock is a compact and practical solution for quick protection. It is fitted directly onto the front brake disc of the motorcycle, preventing the wheel from turning. This type of lock is ideal for short stops, but it does not protect against lifting of the motorcycle, which is why it should be combined with a chain or a U-lock for optimal security.

Motorcycle lock approvals
Motorcycle lock approvals guarantee their level of security and are often required by insurance companies to cover a vehicle against theft. There are several certifications recognised in France and Europe that attest to the resistance of locks to attempted break-ins.
The SRA approval (Sécurité et Réparation Automobile) is one of the strictest. SRA-certified locks undergo rigorous testing, including cutting, twisting and picking attempts. This label is often required by insurers to guarantee compensation in the event of theft.
The NF FFMC certification (Fédération Française des Motards en Colère) is another quality reference. It guarantees that the lock meets a certain level of resistance to the tools commonly used by thieves, although its tests are slightly less strict than those of SRA.
Lastly, the Sold Secure label, originating from the United Kingdom, classifies locks into several security levels (Gold, Silver, Bronze). Only those with a Gold rating are comparable to SRA-approved locks.
These approvals allow riders to choose a reliable and recognised lock, while ensuring compliance with insurance company requirements.
