The essential steps for proper motorcycle winter storage

Here are the 10 essential steps for properly winterizing your motorcycle:

1/ Clean your motorcycle: Thoroughly wash your motorcycle using suitable cleaning products to remove dirt, insects and mud. Make sure the motorcycle is completely dry to prevent corrosion.

2/ Change the engine oil and oil filter: Replace the engine oil and the oil filter to remove contaminants that could cause issues during storage.

3/ Stabilize the fuel: Add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank if your motorcycle is fuel-injected, then run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the stabilizer mixes properly with the fuel. This will prevent fuel deterioration, limit oxidation and inhibit corrosion.

4/ Drain the fuel tank: If you plan to store your motorcycle for an extended period (more than a few months), it is recommended to completely drain the fuel tank to prevent residue build-up and corrosion. This is especially advisable for carbureted motorcycles. 5/ Prepare the battery: Motorcycle batteries naturally discharge over time. When storing your motorcycle for long periods, the battery may become completely discharged, potentially damaging it or shortening its lifespan. Winter storage preparation helps preserve the battery by fully charging it before disconnecting it and keeping it in good condition. You can remove it from the motorcycle (recommended for carbureted bikes) or connect it to a battery maintainer (recommended for fuel-injected motorcycles), either for occasional charging or continuous maintenance charging, to prevent complete discharge throughout the winter.

6/ Lubricate metal parts: Apply a lubricant to exposed metal components such as chains, cables and engine parts to prevent corrosion.

7/ Inflate the tires: Tires can lose pressure during storage. Ensure they are properly inflated to prevent sidewall cracking and deformation.

8/ Protect the motorcycle: Store your motorcycle in a dry, clean location protected from moisture. Ideally, use a protective cover to keep dust away and shield the motorcycle from environmental elements. Moisture can cause corrosion on metal parts such as the frame, cables, chain and other components. Proper winter storage helps protect these elements from corrosion.

9/ Position your motorcycle correctly: Find a flat and stable storage location where the motorcycle can remain safely parked.

10/ Raise the motorcycle: If possible, place the motorcycle on a paddock stand to prevent the tires from remaining in contact with the ground, which can cause flat spots and uneven tire deformation.
