Contrary to popular belief, a properly sized DB Killer does not eliminate your motorcycle's performance: it simply modifies the sound signature without significantly affecting power output.
It is particularly useful in three situations: in urban areas where noise pollution is regulated, during motorcycle gatherings where sound levels are monitored, and before a track day where circuits impose a maximum noise limit (generally between 95 and 105 dB depending on the organiser).
How to choose the right motorcycle DB Killer?
Choosing a DB Killer is based on three technical criteria that should be checked before purchasing:
- The silencer's internal diameter
This is the most important factor. A DB Killer that is too small will not fit, while one that is too large will not stay in place. Measure the internal diameter of your silencer before ordering.
- Compatibility with your exhaust brand
Some manufacturers (GPR, Spark, Akrapovic, etc.) offer specific DB Killers with proprietary fixing systems. A universal model may also be suitable if the diameter matches.
- The desired level of sound reduction
Sound attenuation varies depending on the model, generally between 3 and 8 dB. For track use with a 100 dB limit, choose a high-attenuation DB Killer; for road use, a standard model is generally sufficient.

When should you install a DB Killer?

How to install a DB Killer on your motorcycle silencer?
Installing a motorcycle DB Killer is a simple task accessible to any rider, even without specialised tools. Most models are secured with a retaining screw on the side of the silencer or with a clip system. Here are a few tips for hassle-free installation:
1. Wait until the silencer has completely cooled down before carrying out any work.
2. Apply a thin layer of high-temperature grease to the edges of the DB Killer to facilitate insertion and prevent seizure caused by heat.
3. Insert it fully into position and tighten the retaining screw without excessive force to avoid deforming the silencer outlet.
4. Check the fixing after the first 10 kilometres, as thermal expansion may slightly loosen the attachment.
The entire operation takes less than 5 minutes. The DB Killer can be removed just as easily when riding on a circuit without noise restrictions.

Does a DB Killer reduce motorcycle performance?
A properly fitted DB Killer has very little impact on performance. The slight increase in back pressure it creates may result in a loss of less than 1 or 2 horsepower on the most performance-oriented setups, which remains imperceptible in normal road use.
Can I use a universal DB Killer on any silencer?
Yes, provided that the internal diameter of your silencer matches the diameter of the universal DB Killer. Measure the internal bore of your silencer accurately before ordering.
