The flasher relay is an electronic module that controls the flashing frequency of motorcycle indicators. It maintains a consistent flashing rhythm, generally around 90 flashes per minute, in accordance with road safety regulations.
It is required for several reasons:
- Compatibility with different indicator types: Motorcycles are often originally equipped with halogen bulb indicators. When upgrading to LED indicators, which consume significantly less power, the original relay may cause excessively fast or irregular flashing.
- Electrical stability: A suitable relay ensures a constant electrical supply, preventing unwanted variations in the operation of the lighting system.
- Improved reliability: A properly selected relay helps extend the lifespan of your indicators.
Indicator resistors: balancing the electrical load
Load resistors are commonly used alongside the flasher relay, particularly when the original relay cannot be replaced. Their primary purpose is to simulate the electrical consumption of halogen bulbs in order to prevent malfunction of the indicator circuit.
Here's how they work:
- Load balancing: By adding a resistor to LED indicators, the electrical load of a traditional bulb is replicated, stabilising the flashing frequency.
- Universal compatibility: Resistors allow LED indicators to be installed on motorcycles whose electrical systems were not originally designed for LED technology.
