Why are drain bolts, valves and drain gaskets essential?
Drain bolts allow used oil to be removed during an engine oil change. A damaged bolt or worn thread means the risk of oil leaks and insufficient lubrication, which can lead to engine failure. Replacing it regularly is not an option — it is a necessity.
The drain gasket ensures a perfect seal between the bolt and the engine crankcase. Compressed with every tightening, it cannot be reused indefinitely. The rule is simple and absolute: replace the gasket at every oil change. When and how should these parts be replaced?
Replacing a drain bolt or its gasket should be done systematically at every engine oil change, typically every 5,000 to 10,000 km depending on your model and riding style. During removal, it is important to check the condition of the threads and gasket. Excessive tightening can damage the crankcase, which is why it is recommended to use a torque wrench and follow the tightening torque recommended by the manufacturer.
As for the valves, their wear is more progressive. Valve clearance adjustment should be carried out every 15,000 to 30,000 km, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you notice unusual metallic noise, power loss or starting difficulties, they may need to be checked and, if necessary, replaced.
