Sound level meter

Select your motorbike

Motorcycle sound level meters are essential tools for riders who want to measure the noise level of their exhaust system and ensure compliance with current regulations. Designed to provide optimal accuracy, these devices allow you to quickly verify whether your motorcycle's noise output meets legal requirements, helping you avoid fines and technical restrictions.

How do you measure your motorcycle's noise level?

Noise measurement itself must comply with a number of technical requirements.

  • Prepare the motorcycle: Ensure that your motorcycle is positioned on a flat and stable surface. Measurements are generally carried out while stationary or at a moderate speed, depending on the regulation or standard being followed.

  • Use a sound level meter: A sound level meter is a precise instrument that measures sound levels in decibels (dB). Connect it or position it correctly according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • For a stationary test: Position the sound level meter one metre away from the silencer, directly facing it. The microphone should be placed at the same height as the highest point of the silencer outlet and at least 20 cm above the ground (typically around 50 cm).
    • For an on-road test: Position the sound level meter at handlebar height, or have a passenger or assistant hold it at the appropriate distance according to local regulations.
  • Take the measurement: Start the engine and allow it to run at the required RPM, whether at idle or at a moderate engine speed, according to the applicable standard. Keep the device in position and record the displayed reading.

  • Check the results: Compare the measured value with the noise limits defined by local regulations or by the requirements of the environment where the motorcycle will be used (road, track, etc.). Motorcycles generally need to remain within a noise level of 80 to 85 dB, depending on the testing conditions.

  • Make adjustments if necessary: If the measured noise level exceeds the permitted limits, consider modifying or adjusting your exhaust system to reduce noise output.

Motorcycle noise regulations in France

In France, motorcycle noise regulations are governed by strict laws designed to limit noise pollution. The permitted noise level depends on the type of vehicle, engine displacement and intended use (road riding, track use, etc.). Motorcycles generally need to comply with a noise threshold of 80 to 85 decibels during inspections. Exceeding these limits may result in penalties such as fines or mandatory compliance measures.

Since January 1st, 2025, a regulation known as UNECE R41.05 has expanded the scope of noise restrictions, which previously applied mainly in urban environments and during acceleration tests in rural areas. These standards now also apply to riding scenarios on country roads.

A new regulation has also reduced the previous limit by 3 dB. As a result, motorcycles competing in MXGP may no longer exceed 111 dB if they wish to be allowed to start. This 111 dB limit applies to MXGP, MX2, WMX (Women's Motocross), two-stroke and four-stroke motorcycles, sidecars, Snowcross, Junior MX (65cc, 85cc and 125cc two-strokes, and 250cc four-strokes), Supercross, Supermoto and quads.

To avoid these issues, it is essential to regularly measure the noise produced by your motorcycle's exhaust system and ensure compliance with local regulations. Motorcycle sound level meters help you accurately assess your bike's noise output, allowing you to ride legally and safely.
