In the workshop, powered – pneumatic tools are also appreciated for their simple design. The motor is not housed in the tool but in the compressor, which makes it possible to have more compact, lighter and better-balanced machines than their electric or battery-powered equivalents. The result is better handling around the motorcycle, especially in hard-to-reach areas such as the swingarm, the rear of the engine or the exhaust mounting points.

The advantages of powered – pneumatic tools
Pneumatic tools are essential equipment for motorcycle mechanics enthusiasts and professionals. One of the main advantages of powered tools lies in their robustness and durability. Unlike electric tools, they do not overheat, cope very well with repeated use and require little maintenance, making them an excellent choice for intensive use in a motorcycle workshop. A simple regular check of lubrication and air filtration is usually enough to ensure a long service life.
Their lightweight, ergonomic design also helps reduce fatigue during long jobs, such as completely stripping down a track bike or restoring a classic. The low inertia of the pneumatic motor allows almost instantaneous starts and stops, ideal for successive tightening operations or precision grinding work.
Among the most common pieces of equipment in motorcycle mechanics are pneumatic impact wrenches to tighten and loosen wheel bolts, sprocket nuts or front sprocket nuts with minimal effort. Straight or angle pneumatic grinders are perfect for deburring, adjusting a mounting bracket or cutting a metal part with great precision before welding or painting. Pneumatic drills, sanders and riveters complete the setup for all work related to parts preparation, accessory installation and motorcycle bodywork.
Another important advantage is the absence of electrical sparks at the tool, which can be an asset in environments where solvents, brake cleaners or fuel vapours are used. Pneumatic tools are inherently safer in such contexts than many electric tools, provided that normal safety rules are followed.
Compressor, working pressure and air filtration
Pneumatic tools require a suitable air compressor, which represents a higher initial investment than a simple electric tool. However, correctly sizing the compressor is a key factor in getting the most out of your tools.
For most pneumatic tools used in motorcycle mechanics, a working pressure of 6 to 8 bar is recommended. The air flow rate, expressed in litres per minute, must be sufficient to supply the tool without a drop in pressure. For example, an impact wrench may require between 150 and 300 l/min in actual consumption, while a pneumatic grinder or sander may need an even higher flow rate. An undersized compressor will lead to reduced performance, frequent tank refills and less comfortable use.
The tank capacity (for example 50, 100 or 150 litres) determines how long you can work before the compressor restarts. For a motorcycle workshop that regularly uses an impact wrench, inflator and small grinders, a 50-litre tank may be enough, but a larger volume offers more comfort and more stable pressure.
A good air filtration and treatment system is strongly recommended. A filter regulator with water trap helps separate moisture and impurities contained in compressed air. An integrated lubricator can also deliver a very fine dose of special oil into the line to protect the motor of pneumatic tools. This regulator–filter–lubricator unit helps maintain performance and extend the service life of your tools.
Use and maintenance of pneumatic tools in a motorcycle workshop
To get the best out of your pneumatic tools, a few best practices should be followed. The choice of air hose is important: a hose with too small an internal diameter will cause pressure drops and loss of torque at the tool. For an impact wrench or grinder, a hose with an internal diameter of at least 8 to 10 mm is generally recommended. Quick couplings must be of good quality and perfectly airtight to avoid continuous air leaks.
The maintenance of pneumatic tools is relatively simple, but must not be neglected. It is recommended to drain the compressor tank to remove condensation water, especially in winter or in damp workshops. One or two drops of pneumatic oil in the air inlet of the tool before a working day may be enough to maintain good lubrication if you do not have a central lubricator.
From a safety point of view, pneumatic tools require the use of safety glasses or a face shield, particularly with impact wrenches, grinders and drills. Hearing protection is also recommended, as the compressor and tool together can generate a high noise level in a closed workshop. Suitable gloves ideally complete the personal protective equipment to reduce vibration and protect the hands.
Presentation of BGS tools
We have selected quality pneumatic tools for you, in particular from the brand BGS Technic. Renowned for its expertise in mechanical tools, BGS offers a wide range of reliable, high-performance equipment designed to meet the demands of the most exacting mechanics, whether for routine servicing or more advanced preparation work.
BGS pneumatic impact wrenches cover different torque ranges to suit the most common tightening operations in motorcycle mechanics: wheel removal, swingarm nut, front sprocket nut, rear sprocket. BGS pneumatic drills and grinders allow you to machine, adjust and prepare your parts to the correct dimensions, while riveters and other specialised tools complete the setup for bodywork and accessories. BGS tools stand out thanks to their excellent handling, very good power-to-weight ratio and a particularly attractive price-performance ratio, both for an enthusiast’s workshop and for a professional garage.
