What is a motorcycle exhaust heat shield used for?

The exhaust is one of the most exposed components on your motorcycle. Whether used on the road or on the track, it is subjected to extreme thermal stress, reaching temperatures of up to 600°C on performance exhaust systems, as well as mechanical impacts from gravel, abrasion during a fall and accidental contact with the rider’s or passenger’s boots.

An exhaust heat shield provides protection on three levels:

Mechanical protection: Absorbs impacts from road debris and gravel, protects the silencer from scratches and deformation in the event of a minor fall.
Thermal protection: Creates a barrier against heat to prevent burns to the rider, passenger or nearby components.
Aesthetic enhancement: Provides a premium finish, available in carbon fibre, brushed aluminium or matte black to customise the rear end of your motorcycle.

Carbon fibre, aluminium or reinforced plastic: which material should you choose?

The material of your motorcycle exhaust protector determines both its performance and visual appearance.

A carbon fibre exhaust protector is the preferred choice for sport motorcycles and track riders. Extremely lightweight, highly resistant to high temperatures and visually premium, carbon fibre is ideal for achieving a racing look on a sportbike or naked motorcycle.

An aluminium exhaust protector offers an excellent balance between durability and affordability. It withstands impacts and high temperatures very well. Available in brushed, black anodised or coloured finishes, it suits all motorcycle styles.

The most economical and lightweight solution is reinforced plastic (ABS / PA), which is particularly suitable for adventure and touring motorcycles. While less resistant to repeated impacts, it is perfectly adequate for standard road use.

How to choose the right motorcycle exhaust heat shield?

To find the exhaust protector best suited to your motorcycle, there are three key criteria to consider.

Compatibility: ensure that the protector is designed for your silencer brand and model (universal or model-specific). A dedicated product guarantees a perfect fit and improved long-term durability.

Material: carbon fibre for lightweight performance and a racing appearance, aluminium for everyday durability, reinforced plastic for adventure riding and touring applications.

Intended use: for motorcycles frequently exposed to falls (off-road, enduro), choose a wrap-around protector with reinforced mounting. For road use, a carbon fibre or aluminium protector is more than sufficient.

How to install a motorcycle exhaust heat shield?

Installing a motorcycle exhaust protector is quick and, in most cases, requires no specialised tools.

Follow these simple steps:
1. Wait until the silencer has completely cooled down — at least 30 minutes after the engine was last running.
2. Position the protector around the silencer, following the indicated orientation (some models are asymmetrical).
3. Tighten the clamps, screws or mounting clips evenly to eliminate play without overtightening and damaging the material.
4. Check the mounting after your first ride once the exhaust has heated up, as thermal expansion may slightly loosen the clamps.

The entire installation process generally takes less than 10 minutes, even for beginners.
