Motorcycle frame protectors: the essential ally to limit damage in a fall

Motorcycle frame protectors are among the most effective pieces of equipment for limiting damage in the event of a fall, a slide or even a simple loss of balance at a standstill. Often called frame sliders, sliders or crash pads, they are designed to take the impact instead of your bike and protect the most expensive components: frame, engine, fairings, fuel tank or footrest plates. In the event of a slide, it is the sliders that scrape and take the hit, limiting deep scratches and broken fairings, while in a small fall at a standstill, in a car park or during a manoeuvre, motorcycle frame protectors can be enough to prevent the bike from touching the ground directly at frame or engine level.

On track, motorcycle frame protectors are part of the basic “pack” for many riders, as they can turn a crash that might have been very expensive into just a few parts to replace. As for materials, motorcycle frame protectors generally use technical plastics such as nylon, Delrin or composites to offer good abrasion resistance while sliding correctly on the tarmac. Some models combine a base in machined aluminium with a plastic head, in order to provide both rigidity at the mounting point and impact absorption at the slider itself.

Once fitted, motorcycle frame protectors only require periodic checks of bolt tightness and an inspection after a fall or slide, with replacement of any sliders that are marked or cracked if necessary. They are not reserved solely for track use: in town they protect the bike from low-speed tip-overs and awkward parking manoeuvres, on the road they provide peace of mind on rides, and on the track they help limit repair costs after a crash.

  • For road use, prefer bonding with a translucent sanitary-type sealant; this will allow removal simply by gently heating the part.
