The brake fluid is often overlooked but is crucial for ensuring the performance and safety of your braking system. It transmits the pressure applied to the master cylinder to the calipers to activate the pads. Maintaining high-quality fluid and performing regular maintenance are essential to avoid any power loss or failure during braking.

What is motorcycle brake fluid used for?
The brake fluid is the hydraulic heart of the braking system. When you pull the lever or press the pedal, it evenly transfers pressure from the master cylinder to the brake calipers, allowing the pads to grip the discs and slow down or stop the motorcycle. Without effective brake fluid, this force transmission is compromised, which can make braking weak, inconsistent, or even dangerous.
How to choose the right brake fluid?
The choice of brake fluid directly affects the responsiveness and efficiency of your braking system. There are several types of brake fluids, classified by DOT standards (Department of Transportation):
- DOT 3: Basic glycol-based fluid, inexpensive, and suitable for moderate temperatures. Ideal for standard road motorcycles.
- DOT 4: More heat-resistant than DOT 3, this is the most common choice for most modern motorcycles.
- DOT 5: Silicone-based, not compatible with other fluids. It is not affected by moisture compression but is less common on motorcycles as it can create air bubbles.
- DOT 5.1: Glycol-based like DOT 4, but with a higher boiling point, suitable for sports bikes or extreme conditions such as track use.
In general, DOT 4 is the standard for most bikes, while DOT 5.1 is recommended for sporty or demanding use. Each specification meets specific needs, such as better resistance to boiling or compatibility with synthetic rubber components.
We recommend checking your manufacturer’s manual to confirm which DOT grade is recommended.
At Moto Vision, we offer brake fluids recognized in the motorcycle world: Motul, Ipone, and Bardahl.
Moto Vision Team tip: Never mix different types of brake fluids, even if you only have a small amount left, unless specified by the manufacturer. Always follow the recommended DOT grade in your motorcycle’s manual.
When should you change your motorcycle brake fluid?
If you start feeling that the lever is “soft” or less responsive, or the braking feels spongy, it’s definitely time to replace your brake fluid.
Change your brake fluid every 1 to 2 years, or more often if you ride on track. For optimal braking, bleed the fluid before and after each track season or intensive use.
Bleeding your motorcycle brakes
Using Stahlbus quick-bleed valves saves time and prevents messy splashes.
To properly install a Stahlbus® bleed screw, start by removing the original bleed screw, then screw the valve onto the brake cylinder. Slightly open the upper part (about half a turn) and press the brake or clutch lever/pedal to expel all air bubbles. With each press, the non-return valve opens to release the fluid, then automatically closes when you release it, preventing air from entering.
Once bleeding and fluid replacement are complete, tighten the screw by half a turn to secure sealing, and don’t forget to replace the protective cap. The result: clean, powerful, and consistent braking.
If you’re not yet equipped with Stahlbus bleed valves, you can find all the necessary tools on Moto Vision to bleed your brakes properly: gloves and rags to protect your paintwork (brake fluid can damage it), containers, and more.
At Moto Vision, we know every detail matters to ensure the best riding experience. With a high-quality brake fluid, you’ll enjoy immediate response and optimal stability, even under demanding conditions. Whether you’re riding on the track or twisting mountain roads, our fluids guarantee consistent, reliable braking performance.
